The art of screwpine weaving has flourished for generations at various levels of sophistication and in varying degrees of intricacy throughout the Malay peninsula. One of its most obvious manifestations among the Malays is in the form of mat weaving. Terengganu Malay women have been known for both the fineness of their plaiting and the variety of their patterns. In traditional Malay society, a woman was not considered well prepared for life unless she developed a skill in the art of mat weaving. Hence this skill formed an integral part of character and
personality development.
A vast variety of mats are created to serve different functions, decorative and functional. They are woven in traditional fashion from pandaunus (daun pandan) as well as from the screwpine (mengkuang) leaves. Those woven from daun pandan are regarded as of superior quality, for daun pandan are softer and more easily shaped compared to those woven from mengkuang, which however, are more lasting.

DAUN PANDAN MENGKUANG

 DAUN PANDAN MENGKUANG

PROCESS OF " ANYAMAN "

Hi guy !! today I want to show you how to make the "Tikar mengkuang" I want to show you process how to do "anyaman " the process of mat weaving passes through several stages. First the pandan or mengkuang leaves are cut at the base and at both ends. The thorns and the spine of the leaves are removed and the leaves measured so that there is an even length of all in a set. This is to facilitate weaving. The strips are then passed over a slight fire to soften them. Some weavers beat the mengkuang leaves with cudgels or clubs (belantan) to make them softer and easier to handle. Once softened, they are soaked in cold water for about 48 hours with the water being changed on the second morning. This is done to remove any natural elements likely to attract insects to the mats.

Kelarai or ragi are named and shaped after flowers, bamboo as well as other rural elements or pursuits.Kelarai Pucuk Rebung, Kelarai Siku Keluang, Kelarai Bunga Cina, Kelarai Bunga Cengih and Kelarai Jari Kedidi are some of the traditional designs still in use today.

THE WOVEN ART a.k.a ANYAMAN

The woven arts activities have begun since ancient times. This can be seen in old-fashioned houses where the walls of their houses are woven with bamboo and the fineness of the woven art is still to this day. The walled and roofed house is not hot because the thick layer of the thick leaves insulate the heat flow.  The use of rope, root and rattan is the first foundation in the creation of woven handicrafts that have been a tradition of tradition for centuries. The basic ingredients of this plant grow up in the forests, marshes, villages and areas around the sandy beaches.

Various handicraft forms can be produced through woven processes and techniques of pandanus species (pandan and mengkuang). Woven forms are made based on their functions as shaped into baskets, hats, hoods, mats and various forms used daily. In addition to the pandanus species, other basic ingredients are often used in plants such as, bertam plant , engeissona tritis and nipah palm. In about 1756 to 1794 there was a use of King mats made of fresh rattan and wicker from bemban.

The weaving process is also referred to as "sponsoring". To start a good web site is morning or evening. In dim or cold weather, the leaves are softer and more easily formed without leaving broken effects. In addition to a flat mat with two-dimensional properties, there is a form of three-dimensional webbing. Woven forms like this are usually used by the community in the past to fill or store the material for the purposes of life and the usefulness.

The bamboo and buds are made in an upright and horizontal arrangement. The pandanus and mengkuang leaves are crossed with a diagonal position
